In the Harry Potter books there is a constant battle, but also connection, between good and evil. When Sybill Trelawney went into a trance and made The Prophecy in front of Albus Dumbledore, it set in motion many events. After Snape had told Voldemort what it said, he tried to kill Harry, but ended up murdering his parents instead, at the same time losing all his powers. From that moment on, their two destinies would be intertwined.
